JEFFERSON STARSHIP

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE ends in 1972, ironically, just as the sixties did too !!

(1972-1984)

[1972]:

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE disbands, and is now JEFFERSON STARSHIP,
formed by PAUL KANTNER, and HOT TUNA, with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady !!!

The whole story of these guys, and who did what, blurs over time, and starts to mirror music in general.
I.e. It's a runaway train: people hop on, people hop off. After Pete Sears left in the mid-80's, I asked him who was who. He said they are called 'hired hands.'
I have mixed feelings as well as everyone, about 'pop' music. But I won't dwell, philosophize or pontificate. I like so much of their music, I just want to reflect on that. (Hey, it's my website; go get yer own)

[1979]:

[The boy on the cover, is Bill Thompson. (band manager' son] !!!
This is a big break out album, and tour, for the band. Lead singer Marty Balin left, Grace Slick left, and Mickey Thomas as a new lead singer, is an unknown entity. He previously has worked with Elvin Bishop,
esp. the hit song 'Fooled Around And Fell in Love.' A song at the time, few people initially realized, that had Mickey Thomas songing lead. Donny Baldwin, who also in Elvin Bishop, would also later on, go on join Jefferson Starship.
Craig Chaquico mentioned, he wasn't 'sure if this lineup and band would make it.' He said when they played and sang the song 'Jane,' it was going to work. I guess Craig wanted to Rock and Roll !!!! (and he did) The album is heavily mixed and mastered by Ron Nevison, who also produced Heart, among many other bands. The album sounds a little canned, like Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith, but just as great.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP is now everyone from JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, minus Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who left to form HOT TUNA. The new lineup reflected a change in the musical direction, for the band and music in general. The Vietnam War, and the draft are now over. The 1970's became a decade of arena shows. In the early 1970's, into the late 70's, JEFFERSON STARSHIP becomes more pop oriented. People who loved "Tear down the wall MOTHERFUCKER," from Grace Slick in JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, are now hearing her singing,"We Built This City." Later after PAUL KANTNER leaves the band in 1984, the band changes its name to 'STARSHIP.' Subsequently the band charts 3 top 10 hits, with Sara, We Built This City, and Nothing' Gonna Stop Us now. The debut of MTV in 1983 was certainly a boost. You would think, this would be a financial windfall for the bnd, but PETE SEARS told me the arena shows in the 70's were much bigger for them. No middlemen??

In 1979 MARTY BALIN leaves the group as well as GRACE SLICK. Looking for a new lead singer, the band debuts MICKEY THOMAS, who was singing with ELVIN BISHOP. (Charlie Daniels,"Elvin Bishop sitting on a bale of hay, he ain't good looking, but he sure can play." LOL)

I had no idea JEFFERSON STARSHIP had Videos. Let alone 'hits.' A friend gave me this on DvD.
MTV has just been born (1983?), and music videos, combined with tours and album sales, and record companies, are tranforming arena rock bands into pop sensations.
It's all 80's stuff, with AYNSLEY DUNBAR starting on drums, leaving to later join JOURNEY, and subsequently replaced by DONNIE BALDWIN, who still plays withe the band of the same name today !!!

My favorite albums, and songs, the most sheerly righteous, are all the early 1970's stuff !
     E.g. Long John Silver !!!
